Cirque du Soleil: Corteo

Cirque du Soleil: Corteo arrives at the Palacio de los Deportes for a short season.

Cirque du Soleil shows are a visual delight that never disappoints in their level of production and execution. But we rarely talk about the stories they tell, and Corteo has a touching, tragic yet joyful one, about a clown who sees his own funeral from a warm and carnival-like atmosphere. This show is coming to CDMX for the second time from October 4th to October 15th.

We went behind the scenes

This time, we had the opportunity to spend time with the Cirque du Soleil: Corteo team before their performance at the Arena VFG in Guadalajara. We saw how actors, acrobats, musicians, costume designers, and technicians from over 15 countries come together to show us, in 16 acts, a perfectly assembled circus spectacle that will undoubtedly move you. They showed us everything from how they move from one side to another behind the scenes to ensure that every prop we see on stage is in its place. From using small carts where technicians move while lying down, to tricks and acts with cups that showcase the great vocal talents of some of the cast members.

We understood that to put together such a show, it takes many people, a lot of talent, and even more effort to see it come to life on stage.

What is the story of Corteo?

This show has acrobatics, tricks, and production, but it doesn’t neglect the plot as it tells us the touching story of a clown named Mauro, his dream funeral, and his passage to the next level as an angel. “It’s surprising and moving, I think it seeks to embrace your soul,” says Sofía Montaño, a Mexican singer who is part of the cast. We love that it contrasts the grandiose with the intimate, the comedic with the tragic, and the beauty of perfection with the allure of imperfection.

The stage

And without a doubt, the stage is one of those elements that can leave us speechless, as we will see a rotating center on stage that is 12.5 meters in diameter, with a labyrinth that perfectly reproduces the proportions and size of the classic design of the Chartres Cathedral in France, as well as watercolor-painted sets that have taken two weeks to prepare.

Cirque du Soleil: the Circus!

Now, if what you most expect from Cirque du Soleil (and with good reason) are impossible acrobatics, we can tell you that in Corteo, we will see two particular skills: the Korean Cradle and the Tramponet (a combination of trampoline with a safety net). Artists are launched between two Korean double-frame platforms, bouncing on the 24.38m long trampoline.
