Dark Tales from Mexico

Dark Tales From Mexico is a video game inspired by legends, real stories, and the mesmerizing Mexican folklore. It is a 3D video game with an incredible aesthetic that takes us back to Mexican roots.

Dark Tales From Mexico is one of the most anticipated Mexican video games for this season. It is a series of short games with a fascinating 3D Survival Horror style. What’s best is that they are based on tales from real Mexican folklore, with each monster originally being a physically sculpted and hand-painted figure, then scanned in 3D through photogrammetry.

Furthermore, Dark Tales From Mexico is a video game entirely developed in Mexico, by the BitAll Force studio, which focuses on the terror of legends and oral tradition of the country. It was unveiled at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

It was at the Cannes Festival where thousands of people got to know and play this 3D Survival Horror game, which was created with clay sculptures. Each of the 10 short episodes is now available for PC through Steam and Xsolla.

An interesting aspect of the game is that it’s filled with Easter eggs, secrets, and tributes to the masters of Mexican horror cinema. This isn’t the first time the game has broken the boundaries of its medium, as it previously appeared at the Espanto, Morbido, Stop Motion MX, and MUCCI film festivals, as well as the Zombie Awards and Xsolla Special Prize.

Luigi Cepeda is the Director of Dark Tales from Mexico, the mind behind the inspiration from Mexican legends, where each specter was a physical sculpture made of epoxy clay, hand-painted, and then 3D scanned using photogrammetry.

In one of the games, you can play as Alma Guerrero, a young woman who lives with her grandmother Esperanza, the only family you have left. But last night, Esperanza didn’t return home, and the only clue you have to find her is a dream where you saw her inside the Cloister of San Jerónimo, an ancient building in the heart of Mexico City that is now used as a museum.

Inside this cloister (where Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz lived and died), you will find yourself surrounded and trapped by darkness and a black cat that speaks and seems to know your grandmother.

Dark Tales from Mexico was a game that took over 4 years to develop, purely inspired by collecting thousands of Mexican horror legends, references from Mexican horror culture, movies, radio shows, comics, books, etc., which will be hidden like Easter eggs throughout the games.

Being a “Handmade Game,” there is also a lot of focus on aesthetics, as each piece was hand-painted, and all the specters have an energy that was successfully transferred to the game, just as ancient Mexican towns believe artisans do in their crafts. It is an irreplaceable, beautifully imperfect, and unique game, often preserving the artist’s fingerprint.
