Dark rooms in Mexico City

Dark rooms in Mexico City

Things are intense these days. We need to relax. Some of us stay up all night partying inside a meeting club. Also known as dark rooms, these places are a historic testimony to the conquest and appropriation of public spaces by homosexuals in many cities around the world, and Mexico City is no exception. They emerged from the obligatory need for socializing among peers without inhibitions, sacrifices, or prejudices; to exercise that eroticism that ultimately defines homosexuality, in an environment far from censorship and shame.

True: these spaces, by challenging heteronormative good manners, are destined to be located more or less in practical marginality, however, that whiff of mystery is what stirs butterflies in the stomach of expectation and excitement, but they also function as sites that reinvent urban flow, contributing to a dynamism that over time becomes part of the history of the battle for the dignification of the homosexual community. How could we forget the hustle and bustle of the dark room of the good old days of El Taller or La Estación, which was on Hamburgo street in Zona Rosa, with its painted policemen on the walls, under red sirens and between cages. Today these episodes are remembered with sweaty affection, and if it weren’t for them, Mexico City would still be steeped in tradition…

Tom’s Leather Bar

A true male legend of Mexico City, witness and survivor of the conservation of leather culture. Its depths are a classic of gay nightlife in CDMX, and its Tom’s Tuesdays are an institution that breaks with the respect of the “Godinez” workweek, with its regulars constantly increasing. One of the most genuine dark room experiences, with music ranging from opera, punk, pop, and timeless electronic, has made Tom’s one of the favorites. An indispensable experience.

Sodome

The best sauna in CDMX: highly selective and sophisticated, its corridors are a mastery of architectural horniness and good taste. In addition to the towels around the waist, Sodome is positioning itself as one of the places where new trends in electronic music can be discovered, which are not heard in customary clubs, including straight ones, which resumes that glorious tradition of making gay sites a boiling pot of avant-garde.

La Casita

This is a private club, closed to the general public, which makes it “safer” (understanding that there are still no 100% safe spaces in our city). All encounters are consensual, and they are located in 4 different locations, which are usually open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. They ensure that their spaces are well connected and easily accessible, so they comply with all safety measures. In addition to that, they offer video projections, encounter rooms, dark rooms and more. To know their locations and costs, you can write or call them. We’ll leave you the numbers:

Dark rooms Club Antifaz

This is a club that seems to be somewhat hidden, with a small door on Eje Central Lazaro Cardenas, almost on the corner of Jose Maria Izazaga, between two large steel curtains. To enter, you must ring an intercom. You can go there from early in the day, and it’s open every day. Like other similar places, it has booths, a dark room, a bar area, a coat check, and drinks.

Dark rooms Cine Savoy

In the strictest sense, this is not a darkroom, but in practice, it meets the basic requirements to be a meeting space for the gay community. It has a unique history, as it was opened in 1943 as a normal cinema, where families would go to spend weekends and watch new movies. It was in 1970 when it became an adult cinema showing only pornographic films. Nowadays, although the venue managers deny it, it is a place for sexual encounters, you buy your ticket and staying is voluntary, in any of its three rooms. Two of these are for gay cinema, and one for straight cinema, but in all, their main audience will be gay men. It is not the safest space, chaos actually reigns in each seat, so keep that in mind. Condom use is not mandatory, but we hope you understand that you should always use one.

Tips:

If you have never visited one of these spaces, it is worth sharing a couple of recommendations to enjoy the experience without any scares:

  • In most of them, women are prohibited from entering.
  • These are clubs of erotic adrenaline, which can be intimidating at first glance. It’s important to relax. If you think it may be too much for you, postpone your visit for another time so you don’t make others uncomfortable.
  • Respect is essential to fully enjoy the experience. Respect others’ boundaries so that they also respect yours.
  • Condoms are mandatory.
  • Focus on enjoying yourself and not on judging others. We should encourage a sense of community and not discrimination.
