Theater in Public Squares, Theater in Your Neighborhood: two months of free theater performances in open spaces in Mexico City.
Free and accessible theater for everyone outdoors? That’s right, the tenth edition of Theater in Public Squares, Theater in Your Neighborhood is here, where you can enjoy theatrical performances in open spaces. There will be a total of 23 plays on Saturdays and Sundays from September 2nd to October 29th. Additionally, you can see plays from Brazil and Colombia.
Where will Theater in Public Squares, Theater in Your Neighborhood be presented?
This project has been ongoing since 2013 with the aim of promoting culture and the arts in a way that more people can enjoy them. The performances take place in parks, squares, gardens, boulevards, and even traffic intersections throughout Mexico City for the enjoyment of residents and visitors. Unfortunately, this time they haven’t revealed the specific locations and timings for each play. To find out, you’ll need to stay tuned to the social media accounts (Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook) of the Mexico City Theaters.
What types of plays will be presented?
We do know which theatrical pieces will be presented. There is a collection of Theater, Music, Dance, Multidisciplinary, Cabaret, and Family Shows, all of which will take place on weekends. Here are some of the notable pieces from this edition that you should consider:
Theater
“Gossip, Love, and Prejudice in La Pantitlán,” which portrays the romantic encounter between Nancys and Juancho, who live a story from the toy market.
“Bedtime Stories for Poor Sleep” features two candy vendors and a technician who narrate three tales that spark imagination and evoke childhood memories when stories were told at night with family and friends.
Dance
“Surrounding Heartbeats,” a dance proposal that features eight dancers drawing inspiration from the city and transforming it into a stage to fill the space with the poetry of their movements.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” a classic by William Shakespeare (with a free interpretation for dance), delves into multiple romantic entanglements involving mischievous fairies.
Family Shows
“Tadeo’s Journey.” Stories around new masculinity for children and young people, presenting a shy and solitary boy who meets a character that helps him build his own identity.
“Family Adventures: Chilam Balam, the Popol Vuh, and the Great Quest” follows a child who discovers a book and must journey to the Underworld to find answers about the origin of Humanity.
Multidisciplinary
“Notes for a Wind Band” is a spectacle that connects architecture, sound, and movement to imagine various possibilities of the relationship between music and bodies.
“Voice Seller” features a woman who protects a great treasure: the seed of voice, song, and words, which serves as a remedy against forgetting and regaining the power of expression.
Cabaret
“Transcraft: Cabaret Video Game for Youth” is a cabaret proposal that explores the world of trans identities, delving into the concept of being transgender with updated, accurate, clear, and concise information.
Which groups and companies are collaborating?
The presenting companies include CUT UNAM (in collaboration with the Brazilian Grupo Galpão), Colombian Colectivo Entrevías, Mulato Teatro, La Gorgona Teatro, Parafernalia Teatro, VSS Compañía de Danza, El Hormiguero Colectivo, Los Banyasos, Wang Perro, and Último Tren Danza-Escena.

To remind you, there will be a total of 23 plays over eight weekends presented free of charge in public squares, parks, streets, etc. The event will take place from September 2nd to October 29th (except for September 15th and 16th). Check the theater system’s social media to find out where a play you’re interested in will be, or stay aware of your surroundings to see if any of these performances will happen in your locality.
